Cherry Tree Problem

The bark on my friend's cherry tree has turned black and it has, what looks like, resin type blobs on it. The blobs for want of a better word are golden and hard. The leaves look ok though. I think she mentioned that an ivy was growing up the side of the tree for many years but this has now been removed.

My question is, will this affect the other cherry tree next to it despite it looking healthy and is there something that can be done to treat the problem or should it be cut down?

Many thanks.
