Screening tree or shrub
My neighbour has erected an unattractive structure, 2.5m high, close to the 1.8m fence which separates our gardens and I would like to screen it from our view.
My problem is that on my side of the fence, the area immediately in front of it is paved so I am unable to plant anything in that area.
The closest available soil area is 2.0m to one side and I am asking for suggestions as to a suitable tree or shrub which has the following properties:-
(a) Will grow to a height of 2.5m and could be trained to extend sideways by up to 2.0m
(b) Will tolerate pruning so that it will only be about 0.75m deep along the fence
(c) Whilst I can secure it to the 1.8m fence I would like it to be able to grow unsupported
for the next 0.7m to the required 2.5m overall height
(d) Ideally it would be evergreen but this is not essential

You would have to create a good size raised planter (timber or brick)with suitable irrigation. I have dealt with this company and found them very helpful, may be worth a call.

Clematis montana? Mine grew like the clappers - not evergreen but there are lots of branches in the winter, without leaves.
I was going to suggest the same as landscaper - get some good big troughs and position them on the paving against the fence, should be fine for climbing plants.
I had to grow a quick hedge to stop kids climbing over my back wall - berberis was good (and prickly) with fruit that the birds love in the winter.
