Builder - its an internal wooden door and the D shaped latch 'thingy' doesn't sit in the hole made for it on the other side properly! Does this explain my problem?
move the latch
It's the "keep" that's out of position. DrainBabe is right. You just need to move it. It's tricky to get it right though.............. or, if it's positioned right, but is just too far away, then pack it out with some cardboard behind it.
Well it might be the door frame 'shuts' are binding and springing the door back open.
Remove the shuts carefully. Close the door into the latch til the door is flush and renail in the shuts to fit the profile of the door.
Old door frames will maybe not have shuts ... The door is direct in the frame. Then you will need to either pack the catch out with a little card, or adjust hinge hanging.
Yes, foofy ......... if you're up for it, the way I would do it is as Al says ........... take off the door-stops (as I call them)

Al ........... where does "shuts" come from? Just wondered. I've never heard that term before :o))))
Probably old 'regional' carpenters terminology : )
I didn't make it up .. honest.

(foofy probably didn't know what I was on about .. said it without explaining!)
