the handle of my favourite mug has come away from the body. My experience with superglues has not been too good. Can anyone suggest an effective glue that will hold both parts together when hot and when in use?

well i agree with you about superglue. Sadly TBH I don't think that any glue is safe to use on a mug as the potential for a hot lapful doesn't bear thinking about. Put pencils or flowers in it.
Try Alaldite, 2 tubes of resin and hardener they make several types depending on what you want to fix including one in a "Gun" type of thing so that you always get the right amount of hardener to resin. Not particularly cheap but if you clean and replace the caps after use it stores.
Go for the standard araldite. It takes longer to set but is much stronger.
