My bathroom sink counter has lost its gloss

I have a bathroom sink with a black counter that has lost its shine - is there any way of replacing the gloss?
The top looks like it's a kind of smooth marble-like material - it was shiny when we bought it, but now it is installed and all the tiling has been done in the bathroom etc it is dull and does not seem to polish up. I'm not sure if it's got something in it, or if it has had the top layer taken off somehow. Any ideas on getting it shiny again? The shop I bought it from is no longer trading so no joy there. Any help much appreciated!
