i ve tried in the past and gave it up as a bad job. i have seen it done at work but they used a ready mix not sand and cement mixed. by hand
try a wet as possible mix with washing up liquid as an aid to smoothness /consistency but i would,nt hold your breath on it working.it seems like a good idea but its hard to put into practice
at home i resorted to a trowel to point up, putting in a DPC at low level ,on my knees and shoulders for ages.in the end i found it easier to use a semi dry mix that i allowed to go off by moisture in the air.it packed better in the joint with less shrinkage or cracking as the courses above settled
3 parts building sand (not sharp sand) to 1 cement a small splash of feb and sbr mixed thoroughly to soft consistency.
stir mix in bucket before every re fill and keep all tools clean.
