Hi daughters pull switch has jammed. Disconnected to find broken bits inside of pull switch. When I undone the cover from the switch to reveal wiring.the red wire was not connected.only a black wire with a red sleeve was connected.this was connected to the common terminal. Checked wiring for pull switch on you tube video. And that said the red wire should be connected to common terminal and black wire should go to l2 terminal.can anyone explain why the black wire was connected to common. And the red wire was not connected at all when dismantled.

For your situation it will not matter.Reconnect.......red-common.......black(red sleeve) to L1 or L2.

Thank you both for your help much appreciated
The switch was wired the wrong way round (it works just as well back to front, but correctly wired it will fail safe). It would not work at all with one of the wires disconnected. It must have pulled out when you dismantled it.

Get a new switch and connect it properly.
The red live should be permanently live. The black wire with the red sleeve is what is known as switched live. it goes to the lamp; when the switch is off it should not be live, but when the switch is on it connects to the permanently live red wire so that the lamp lights. It matters little which wire is connected to which but personally I'd connect the black to common. Mainly because if you have a double throw switch, then when off the live is just on the one connection, which seems safer to me somehow.
