Breaking a metal lock on an old trunk

I am moving overseas, and some of my belongings are packed in an old-fashioned second hand trunk. Long story, but I didn't realize that the old lock still worked, and I don't have the key! I want to break the lock to prevent problems at customs when I transport it. My ideas are either to saw through the metal above the lock, which joins the lid and the trunk (but I have doubts about whether a hacksaw would allow me to exert sufficient pressure) or to use some sort of acid to attack the lock mechanism. Unfortunately I don't know what sort of metal was used to manufacture the lock.
Any advice about materials or techniques would be much appreciated!
Thanks.
