Ordnance Survey old markings

On an 1890s NW London OS map with only a limited 'key', there are many unexplained areas, best described as irregular ovoids. Each looks like a puddle, each has an irregular wiggly line protrubing in no particular direction. Each covers varying areas from a few to many square metre. They appear in fields, at the sides of fields, and at the sides of some roads. What do they represent? Help please.
