An heretical sect who became established in medieval Languedoc Roussillon, persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church, a crusade led by Simon de Montfort, led to their being wiped out following war, seiges, massacres. Their castles, on rocky inaccessible outcrops, remain as a major tourist attraction of the "Pays Cathare". Read "The Perfect Heresy" by Stephen O'Shea published Profile Books in 2000.

The area is well worth a visit, If you are in that part of France. The castles are spectacular, and you can understand why and how they hid in the area
