Any serious history buffs out there?
At the age of 9, when the BBC news was always on, I clearly remember an afternoon news bulletin of the end of the battle reporting that Hitler had sent a message to Stalin asking / demanding that after the war all prisoners would be allowed to return to their homeland. This has never seemed logical to me and I wonder if it was propaganda?
On Boxing Day, after the Scharnhorst was sunk the BBC reported in words, obviously not now remembered clearly, that Hitler had been persuaded to let the battleship go to sea hoping for a great Christmas victory. How could this have been known; I suspect it too was propaganda.

For my part it is simply a matter of whether or not Hitler issued such a demand.
As for the return of German prisoners from Russia, only a very small proportion survived to make the journey. Then, as now, the Russians care little about life.

Soviet Russia had NOT signed the relevant Geneva convention and so the Germans treated the million or so Soviet POWs terribly badly- and so did the soviets after stalingrad - I think remember this is AB, 250 000 surrendered and 25 000 made it back
The German prisoners were charged with war crimes and usually got 10 y hard labour - AND that - their return in 1955 led to the widespread unrest ( brutally put down again) such as the riots in Hungary. They found there was no socialist paradise and things were as had as when they went into the labour camps ten years previously

Post war no one was in doubt about the concentration camp system and the protection given to Allied POWs. Huge numbers of eastern european were rendered stateless ( now unlawful see Shamira begum stc) and they werent quiet about the advantages of being liberated by the Nazis
