Only just noticed that this thread is in the History section :-)
Jim, I just don't like animated films whether or not they stick to the same story. I never liked cartoons as a child either. I like true to life dramas, adventures, crime etc. with human actors. And romcoms!
Too many to choose between.
Ummmmmm... Dark Star wasn't bad.
Many good ones I don't recall the name of.

As someone with a Japanese animé character as an avatar, I'm obviously disagreeing here! (Not with your tastes, but just in supporting cartoons)

Some of the best films of recent years have been animated, including one of the best sci-fi films in Wall•E.
I kind of feel that the animated part is secondary to everything else, or at least it should be, in a good film. Wall-E is an excellent case in point; or you could compare, say, the Simpsons in the later seasons (superior animation quality) to the Simpsons in the earlier seasons (great stories and just all-round better in every way that matters).
Mozz,

3 new Star Wars films coming to be released Dec 2033, Dec2025 and Dec 2027.
As long as they remember to write the stories this time...
Sorry 2023 not 2033
Absolutely agree Jim. It's something both Pixar and Studio Ghibli excel at, drawing you in with the story so much, you almost forget you're watching a cartoon.

The first five minute of Up is a perfect example.
Too many to mention but of top of ones head:
Aliens
Back to the future trilogy
Terminator 1&2
Men in Black

Fantasy:
Highlander
The Crow
// ... you almost forget you're watching a cartoon. //

Yup, or the last four episodes of a certain animated Star Wars show :)

No argument there.

There's a bit of a renaissance in animated kids shows going on of recent years. I used to watch some great shows with my boy: We Bare Bears, Apple & Onion, Regular Show, Adventure Time.

Nothing better than Gravity Falls though. Completely wasted on kids that one.
off topic Mozz (but if Q&P-ers can do it, it must be ok)-

what's your favourite Ghibli film, or does your avatar give it away?
Its a toss up between Stargate - serious and Galaxy Quest - comedy

A heads up if you havent seen the orville yet its very good and funny.
It does to be honest Mushroom, although I love Howl's Moving Castle and Porco Rosso just as much as Totoro.
+1 for The Orville. I know it was intended as a comedy, but it's turned into the best Star Trek seroes since DS9.
