Looks as though it may have started with a fire in possibly an explosives depot. Film shows lots of little flashes under the initial cloud
According to a "City Official" it was fireworks. I think that means the more deadly sort of "firework" that was meant to be displayed elsewhere.
My apologies it was not a City Official.

""The Lebanese health ministry had previously claimed the explosion was caused by fireworks.""
Utterly terrifying.
looks like fertilizer went up, something first having exploded......
Wow !! As a retired fireman, it looked to me like a mass storage propane tank exploding - just my opinion mind you !. Glad I wasn't there.

The initial blast looks like fireworks exploding. There are multiple small blasts. But that ignites something else. It is at the port so it may have been bunker fuel for the ships, propane gas or fertiliser.
The stuff Hezbollah sends to Israel on small rockets would not cause such a massive blast.
fbg40,
I think you are right.
This is the gas storage facility at the Port of Beirut. It is undoubtedly what blew up.

the news has my theory as being the cause - fertiliser as in NH4NO3 going up - or explosive as the compound can be used for that as well, a first fire triggering the big explosion and that could well have been fireworks. It didn't look like a propane one - as propane explosions tend to be more 'nuclear' in shape....
I just watched the video. Terrifying.
I've got the overriding feeling it was an accidental disaster rather than a terrorist intervention.

Terrible, awful, terrifying.

When I saw it on the News it said a boat load of fireworks, I've seen a number of big bangs in my time, I have my doubts.

(Looks like MOSAD got to Doooogie before he could finish)
There was a breaking news banner - ammonia nitrate (I think).

They are saying that a fire in a fireworks factory ignited sodium nitrate in a next door warehouse. It has been stored there for six years not under safety conditions.
Lebanon are a safe haven for Hezbollah.
Nasrallah has been on the Israeli target list for years.
Hezbollah have been making incursions into northern Israel.
You don't mess with Israel.
Iran has also had several, ''mysterious,'' explosions recently.
It was a frightfully powerful blast, but not a "mysterious" one
