Why are you putting that (the OP) in the past tense, Stargazer?
Too complicated to explain at length. Basically the Jews filled a gap in the market as Christians were forbidden to lend money at interest. This led to many Jews becoming wealthy and caused resentment.
Since Jesus turned over the tables of the money lenders at the temple, Jews have been accused of usury. Taking advantage of spenders proliferation. Accruing wealth by parsimonious living, then exploiting the less fortunate.
Personally I don’t have any problems with Jewish folk at all. We are all equal. Hitler used the race as a propaganda tool, blaming them for Germany’s financial meltdown after the First World War. People love to hate.
Thank you for some good information jackdaw and david. I have quite rightly always been horrified by Jewish persecution, but to think it is down to "money" back in the day during biblical times and people continue to this day despite the Holocaust,to peddle their "hate" is unbelievable to me.
No expert, but I suspect keeping oneself apart as a community, as a separate people, not just a different religion, wouldn't help. Immigrants should integrate or will be viewed with suspicion by the natives, as the "'them' and 'us'" relationship is highlighted/confirmed. That said, most places that is less obvious these days. I think adherence to old social traditions have softened for many.
Yes, but the Jews, unlike the Moslems, never sought to impose their mores on the indigenous population. They kept themselves to theirselves, and therein lies the difference.

The Jews were also blamed by some Christians for the death of Christ.

v-e, if you read on from the title into the rest of the OP, your question will be answered.

Yes, as moneylenders they ended up being owed interest. A typical procedure: the king would borrow from them and then, rather than repay the loan, just expel them, while whipping up popular resentment to justify his actions.
