Nobody knows exactly but it was about 3000BC, which is 5000 years ago. More or less.

My favorite idea about this is that when Julius Caeser looked at Stonehenge he was looking at something made by people at least as far seperated from him in time as he is from us.

There is some debate about the age of the stone circle, but most archaeologists think that it was mainly constructed between 2500 BC and 2000 BC although the henge was built in several construction phases spanning 2,000 years. The older circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.

Archaeologists have found three large Mesolithic postholes nearby, beneath the modern tourist car-park, which date to around 8000 BC, although there is no suggestion they are connected with the later monument.

Some legends held that Merlin the wizard had a giant build the structure for him, while others held the Devil responsible. It was the Romans that first associated druids with Stonehenge and perhaps because of this (druids were persecuted because of their opposition to the empire) the henge was desecrated sometime between 55 BC and AD410 by the Romans, who tore down a number of the upright stones. In 1615, Inigo Jones argued that Stonehenge was a Roman temple, dedicated to Cnelus, a pagan god, and built following the Tuscan order. Later commentators maintained that the Danes erected it. Indeed, up until the late nineteenth century, the site was commonly attributed to the Saxons or other relatively recent societies.

Stonehenge has always been on my "must see list". When I at some point see it, I'll sound very thoughtful when I say to my travel companions "When Julius C�sar...."
