I went to see this with the kids today and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Johnny Depp was brilliant.  What I want to know never having read it is - how close to the book it was as there was much more to it than the original. Sorry if this question was asked before but I cant seem to access answers.

..this film was closer to the book than the 71 version, though they made up the bit about Wonka's dad, I read an interview in the paper by Dahl's daughter (or possibly widow ) that he hated the 71 version, and he would have most probably aproved very much of this version...

...I enjoyed this version much more than the Wilder one, good wasn't it...

Thoroughly enjoyed it ermintrude.  A really feel good film.  I have never watched Johnny Depp before as he would not have been a favourite but he was great in this.
