I have just heard about a woman who ran what was known as a 'Scuttling tent' in the 18th century. Has anyone any idea about what this might have been? It was possibly related to the army or service life.

Best I can do apart from the more obvious definitions are that, a Scuttle Cask was a drinking fountain, a rumour or a gossip? May be some connection there, other than the usual sinking of ships and scurrying away definitions.
Well done gettinblurry, mystery solved. Bet they had a scuttle cask in there though LOl
and no doubt a lot of scuttlebutt too mamyalynne :)
Oh yes indeed.
Quiet, chaps, Tesco may be listening in, and there'll be a Tesco sutling tent on every street corner. Probably doesn't need planning permission?
