Any idea how or why a family can be missing from three census returns. 51 61 and 71.

Did they go abroad? Changed the spelling of their surname? Are they on 1881, so you track back?
As THC says, I lost a family from 51 through to 71. They are on the 81. I did a search in USA and found they had gone off there for a few years retiring back to the village the chap was born in.

I've also found "missing persons" in Wales and Scotland.
If you give details I'll have a look...........I'm bored at the mo.
Are you just looking at the ancestry surname index results or have you actually manually ploughed through the RDs that they should be in? That is the old fashioned way we had to look for people a decade or so ago and more, it meant you didn't miss them and you got an idea of anyone else of interest and also of the area/occupations /housing etc. Go into ancestry or whichever and find where they should be and just click through te folios, no doubt it is a transcription error.
craft if you can please would you look for a marrige of Mark Bellas Langhorn(e)+
and a Sarah in Westmorland in about 1860ish, their first child william was born 1862, they lived at Shap . I've been looking off and on for a week and not got it. It's for the bloke at works wife, I;ve done her tree for her birthday on friday and this is pretty much the only name I;m missing (the wife's surname), I'm not going to buy certificates for it so hoped to match the marriage index entry up.
p.s. craft, I think her surname was johnson
will do...........
Mark Bellas Langhorn married Sarah Johnston at West Ward, Westmorland 1861 Q3 10b 761.
Cheers for that, Mark Bellas langhorn's entry is not transcribed by ancestry! at least it doesn't come up when i put his name in, nor wen i just put the ref details in and get a list of all entries in that RD for Q3 1861, sarah does though, cheers for that, i'll report the error too whilst i;m at it!
Yes I saw that on ancestry.....I confirmed the bridegroom on the genealogsit.
So proves my point in the article I wrote for AB the other week, and also highlights sigmas's issue on this thread.

Thanks for the offer, I'll sort it out and re-post after I get back from my holidays
Dotty, I am an ancestor of Agnus Langhorn (the daughter of Mark Bellas Langhorn) discussed in this thread. I am hoping that you can put me in touch with "the bloke at works wife" ;) Makes me wonder if we are relatives. I have information with respect to Agnus going forward that I'd like to share with her. Please let me know how I can get in touch with her. Regards.
