Is there anyway to access irish BMD's? the only site I have found charges 5 euros per record result which sounds a bit pricey to me.

Depends on what you're looking for and how far back. - what in particular?

starting on family history, I have access to 1911 and 1901 census but obviously will be looking at marriages or births to get maiden names/other details to ensure Im with the right family and to help me to go back further
it's far from handy. You're in luck in some ways in that thre are records going back centuries. Unfortunately not all are online. Each region (I think by county) had a genealogy service partially funded a few years back but they've almost all closed - may be what you've found, they were money-making businesses (not for profit they claim: http://www.rootsireland.ie/ifhf/terms.php), so you'll be on your own. There's apparently a very good site run by the mormons(!) but I've never used it.
Pretty much all records are publically available but you may need to visit. Going back a few generations the local records were all held by the local churches and still are (for free). You could try contacting the national library in dublin as they have copies of loads, but bizarrelly quite a few were destroyed by the govt at the foundation of the state.
I guess you've seen this?

looks a good book, I have been doing geneology for the last few years, It will be the first time I am doing irish geneology, I put it on the back burner because I did not find that many resources on the internet a few years back and a lot of info was only available if you travelled over (I am in england)

I have a lot of family to do so a bit daunted by the prospect !
a lot of Irish records have been destroyed, you can try ancestry Ireland http://www.ancestryireland.com/database.php although you will have to pay to access some of the records. The "site run by the Mormons" is www.familysearch.org and is surprisingly good, you might find something there. good luck!
