I'm trying to trace my maternal grandfather's family tree and struggling with my G.G.grandfather's family. I'm descended from Arthur Saville (b. 1895 in Skirbeck), who is the son of John Edward Rodgers Saville (b. 1856 in Hull) and Ellen Ruth ? (b. 1858 in Boston, Lincs). Arthur also had two siblings, John H (1897) and Lizzie (1900) both born in Skirbeck.

I can't find a record of John and Ellen's marriage to get her surname, or John's birth record (I do have a John Saville living with his grandparents in Hull, but as there are no parents in the picture I can't trace it forward and be sure it's the right person).

Needless to say South Lincs council is USELESS, I can find anying from the very helpful peeps at N Lincs but unfortunately they don't cover this area. Does anyone know of a way to find this info, I've tried all the usual sites etc and am drawing a blank! I will be eternally grateful and will happily return the favour if anyone is struggling with a search of their own, I'm a full member of Ancestry and also have access to the coveted 1911 census!

sorry Dot, I've just gone back to my tree and looked properly, (damn tree on genesreunited didn't show her 'other' family when I clicked on John...) Walker was her name from a previous marriage to Edward K Walker, also somewhere in South Lincs...
Ellen Ruth Walker was I think a widow when she married John E R Saville, I think in 1891 she was married to Edward K Walker and lived in Skirkbeck with their two children Betsey E and Charles Henry aged 8 and 6, but I haven't checked further.
Have you tried the Lincoln Record office? I've been there lots of times and the staff are incredibly helpful.
Question Author
that's them, the children move with her to live with John Saville, Betsey somehow morphs into Bertie by the next census...

Barmaid - I'm feeling it might be inevitable, however as I live in Cheshire it's a bit of a treck and I'd rather exhaust every other option first!
in 1881 Edward and Ellen are already married with a 1 year old son william.
Edward Keightley Walker married Ellen Ruth Smith at Boston Q3 1877 ref 7a 685. on the 1881 census there is a Francis Smith aged 66 living with them I guess that's her mother
Question Author
thanks so much for that! At least he has a distinctive middle name, I'm going to have a nightmare tracing Ellen Smith lol

in 1861 John E Saville aged 4 is grandson to a Ryley and in 1871 he is just John Saville with the same grandfather.
I think he was possibly the son of Err (er) Saville but can't confirm that as yet.
