Barbers did commonly perform dentisty and some surgery, but probably not as late as 1851. Being a barber was a noble profession, frequented by the rich, but by then wigs had become popular and the barber profession was not what it once was. They may have still performed tooth pulling etc. for their poorer clients,as they may not have access to anyone else.
