same as Manilow, I expect, possibly from something Germanic or Slavic like Manilov
In the UK it seems to have been predominantly found in staffordshire/derbyshire and sometimes in nottinghamshire, not alot of families in all, possibly just a few dozen, probably all related, it may be a corruption of manilove, or manilow as jno suggests
and the interesting bit..
Hi Dot !

is over the pronounciation.

IN the 1300's manilove would have been pronounced manilow (with a v on the end)...that is like loaves

and then and then you had the great vowel shift - or should the the vole shift (joke) which linguistic date to Jan 1 1375

and then there is a choice, stick with the spelling and change the pronounciation - those would be the Manilows

and stick with the uncorrupted spelling and change how you say it - Manilove.

and that my dear is how you get Dear and Darling
(and heart and 'varsity and clerk)
