thinking about buying a 40gb PS3 for its blue ray capability, but wondered is the PS3 recordable, or is that limited to higher spec versions?

It depends what you mean by recordable. No current PS3 has a writable BluRay drive. However all PS3's will be able to record TV to the internal hard disk using the Play TV add on which is scheduled for release this year.

thanks for the reply, just what I wanted to hear.
If you only want it for the Blu-Ray capability, then you'd do better to spend an extra 50 on the new Panasonic model, I can't remember the model number, but check this month's What Hifi magazine.

It's much better, has more features than the PS3 and doesn't look like a George Foreman grill.

Obviously, if you want it for the games as well, then the PS3 would be a better choice :)
