you shouldn't catch any virus, if you have norton, or mcfee anti-virus on your pc, it should detected anything trying to download to your pc
The short answer is yes you can,even with anti virus protection installed. If you suspect you have a virus go to this site and do their free online scan,it is perfectly legitimate(part of PC CILLIN group)

Some virus's can disable the installed software on PC's so an online scan is a good back-up.
