I've been challenged to an online game of chess by an ex. I am rubbish and he is pretty good. I know I'm not going to beat him, but I don't want to look a fool. Is there an app or website that can help me with the best moves to counter his moves?

I don't want to cheat exactly. I just need a bit of help.

Isn't using an app to find the best moves to counter his moves the literal definition of cheating, though?

There are several online chess engines that you can use, in one form or another. Personally I'd suggest a better plan would be to find a fellow chess-playing friend to discuss the game with. That way you aren't finding the best moves "blind", so to speak, but with some understanding of *why* they might be the best moves. Or not.

Jo...my son used to play chess online against a computer. Practice makes perfect...

My OH taught the boy how to play chess and now he thrashes him everytime they play.

Thanks, Jim and ummmm. I think I'll practise a lot before I accept his challenge.
How are you playing this game of chess by the way? Online, that I know, but through what site/app?
You can get yourself one of these;
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
and train yourself to play against it. I have a large computer chess set, but found one of these in a charity shop in England for 99p !
You can set them to any level - I shouldn't say this, but if you set it to high, you can use the moves it recommends :0)

Thanks, khandro. I've found an app which is quite fun. I just played a game against the computer and won, somehow! I'll have to put the settings a bit higher.

Jim, I'm not sure yet.
I have the best chess set I've ever seen. Carved seats and carved table (my mum won it in a pool competition) and I had Alice in Wonderland chess pieces. Walked into the kitchen one day and my son was standing on a dining chair throwing them at the wall....
Ah ok. There's a couple of online sites I'm a member of so if you like you can let me know which one you end up on -- if it's the same then I might offer a game/comments on your actual games at some point.
Why not post your ex’s moves on this site and let fellow Abers suggest moves for you?
It would make an interesting thread for chess players to follow.

Thanks Jim and hymie. That might be interesting. I need to practise a bit more and wait for him to tell me how we're going to play the game. He's been very quiet online today.
After a brief flirtation with online chess I abandoned it, basically it's who can cheat the best, I never used anything but my own brain power but you never know what the other person is doing. Same with pub quizzes, now a googling contest. I have a beautiful chess set and I will supply the brandy/malt to whoever wants to play me face to face.

And people play poker online for money!
that's different ellipsis, the site runs it and they win regardless so they have no reason to cheat. Jim I'd be interested in your chess site I've been thinking of dabbling again.
3T, there's one site which I think is Gameknot, will have to go and double check it tho.
Depends on the speed you want to play at, TTT. The two I have in mind are chessworld.net (correspondence chess) and chess.com (usually played at faster speeds, sometimes as little as a minute per game although five-ten minutes is more common). If you ever join one, let me know.

And as for a face-to-face game... well, we can but dream I suppose!
I like the idea of making a move when I can perhaps over days, I assume chess world would facilitate that best.

Your correct with gameknot.com

I have been a member for several years now.
Yes it would.

You can join through the following link:

Ok I joined, I'm TTTora
I should have sent you game invites; maybe they'll show up in your email inbox or if you log in to the site.
