I would have thought the more obvious causes are being uprooted, without financial means and in a country that is not that keen on having you ....

Peter, from your link and to anyone else who cares to read what these people are going through.

Got many in your village then?

Thought not.
I see it omitted to mention then when used in a negative derogatory fashion it tends to be directed towards economic migrants posing as genuine refugees and asylum seekers, rather than the real McCoy. And at other times when the real McCoy fails to stop at the first safe country but feels they have a right to demand entry anywhere they wish.
How come whenever a picture is shown of these asylum seekers and refugees they are nearly always young single men? Surely if they were genuine asylum seekers there would be children, women and the elderly.
