David Braben got funding via kickstarter and is busy developing a modern day rework of Elite.

The original passed me by someone and I've not played it but am aware of the impact it had.

It all seems to be a bit low key. I only know about it because someone at work donated 500gpb on kickstarter. Will it be a non-event met with a re-sounding 'meh' from the gaming fraternity?

Thats interesting, Snafu - I had heard that Braben was attempting to raise cash to develop a modern-day version of elite, but last I had heard he was still making the appeals.

Your colleague sounds a fan :) I was myself, back in the day when it was released - it had all the key elements of a sandbox game, and plenty of things to uprate.

Just not sure how it can be adapted to modern day expectations. A smoother, more graphically pretty version of the original will not do the trick.I will be interested to see hints during the development of the game :)
I know some people who would be very excited about this. It also passed me by.

I think they could do some clever pseudo-oldschool stuff with the visuals. Space games are quite popular at the moment, with things like FTL and Floatilla kickign about...
Played this a lot when it came out. You could be a pirate or a heavily armed trader.
It was re-vamped by Microsoft and called Freeelancer, but not very well executed.
I'd love to see it re-worked and brought up to date. IMO it should have an online multiplayer to suceed, something similar to Planetside.
I used to play Elite 2 a bit - very early on, I stumbled across a trading route between 2 planets that was very profitable in both directions, which meant that I built up a fortune very quickly and could easily afford anything available.
Ahh I was trying to remember that game - Freelancer. If memory serves, it used the voiceover talents of Clive Owen?

And I used to love Planetside. Problem was you needed something like a Cray Supercomputer and a T1 internet connection to play it properly :)

Am just dabbling with Defiance - game of the TV series - that is an MMO of sorts... finding it quite entertaining so far, although the group/clan chat functions look a little clunky....
I loved Elite, it was, in my opnion, the best Speccy game. Apart from the docking :-)

However I wonder, after the passing of the years if you can re-create it or the excitment.
I never played it either but have read odd bits and pieces in the gaming press about it.

I think Braben got the required funding and then some. Not sure how well it will do. Nostaligia isnt a profitable notion amongst gamers who crave for cutting edge.

I should imagine anyone hellbent on playing this genre is already playing Eve online. Without being defeatist I cant see Brabens attempts matching the complexity, size and community of Eve.
Thought Elite was BBC only?

Available on the Spectrum as well, although the graphics were different.
wikipedia says that it was available for:- BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Apple II, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, MSX, Tatung Einstein, IBM PC compatible, Acorn Archimedes, Amiga, Atari ST, Nintendo Entertainment System

I've recently downloaded an indie game on xbox. Its an Elite style game called 'Odyssey 3011'. Its a bit pants - I've been gaming since 1980 and theres not been a lapse since then whereby I havent owned a pc or console that I've gamed on. Nostaligia only works with music, not games IMO.
When you drop back to an old game you realise how hard and unforgiving they were.
