Is it a dos game - then google dosbox, if its an older windows game then you can use compatibility settings , do a right click on the .exe file and goto properties it should give you options to run under compatibility mode ie win95 win98 etc.
Question Author
it says it's a 16 bit program I have tried to go into properties and compatibility but it says

this programe INSDOS.EXE cannot run due to incompatibility is 64 bit windows
Question Author
maybe dos box then?
a quick search on wikipedia says it was a dos game so yes dosbox might be your best bet.

trying dosbox but it is quite difficult to understand lol
Question Author
as the game is on a cd rom I am trying to launch the game and get the opportunity to install it but it says the program with not load with dos??
Run it through ScummVM

www.scummvm.org

Much less faff
However it will run quite well with dosbox, Here's a quick guide for setting it up and running. This is assuming that your CD/DVD ROM drive is D:\
Create a folder on you C:\ drive and call it something like DOSPROGS but no longer than 8 characters.
Run Dosbox
at the prompt type MOUNT C C:\DOSPROGS and press return
then type MOUNT D D:\ -t CDROM and press return
Put your Discworld game in your drive and type D:\DISC.BAT and press return and follow onscreen instructions to install it, but I think you might fimd Scummvm easier to use.

tried with dosbox again no luck but tried scummvm...and success :D

thanks a lot
