Problem with GTA San Andreas - saves deleting themselves

I had almost finished the Los Santos section of this game when I went to load up the penultimate mission on this section, and found that all the saved files have deleted themselves. I remember this happening also when playing GTA III. Does anyone know how to fix this, and if there is any way to recover the lost saves? Thanks.
