before you get to carried away what is the hardware in the laptop mainly the graphic card this is quite important as it will affect which games you can play and what the experience will be like. Not being awkward but you wouldnt want to buy something that wont run or looks nothing like the screenshots on the back cover

My Hardware is fine to run any games on it and i have tested Doom 3 on it which most reviewers use for testing as it is supposedly a very demanding game with regard to frame rates etc and my laptop breezed through that fine! Im thinking of getting Battlefield Vietnam just cos i liked the look of it and Dawn of War has been recommended to me as well
Dawn of war is very good, I haven't played it on-line but it's a great game.
that is a good sign!! but doom 3 is a little old, if you download 3dmark06 free benchmark program www.majorgeeks.com/3DMark06 and post your score that will be sufficient info
cheers

How about some suggestions for games rather than worrying about the Hardware! I know my Laptop can handle any game i just wanted to get some ideas of good games!
if you know your laptop can handle any game, that would imply you know all games available, so make your decision based on your already vast knowledge

Not at all Mack and if you read my question you would know that. How does my Laptop being able to cope with any game imply that i know what games are available and worth playing? Sorry that doesnt make sense to me?
I asked what good on-line games there were out there that other people enjoyed and that i might too. I had already said that i loved Battlefield so i was hoping for games of perhaps a similar style. Also Dawn of War had been mentioned as being rather good too which WoWo agreed with in a post below. My question was never about what my Laptop could and couldnt do it was about which games other people recommend. There are so many more Pc games out there compared to Console games and unlike console games Pc games cannot be taken back so i didnt want to buy some crappy ones. Im sorry that you havent understood my question but thanks for trying, i will seek advice elsewhere now.
1a) if you know that your laptop (which are notoriously underpowered) can run everything (literally) you would have to know all the system specs for everygame. Else how could you know?

1b) A game is only worth playing with a good frame rate add in online lag and it would be a worthless experience

2) there are lots of game similar to battlefield these happen to be the most demanding games

3) your right your question did not go into such depth, it should of , it is pointless being recommended a game that you cannot play
4) When you buy a pc game in Game (the shop) you get a 3 minute chat regarding the quality of your machine vs the game specs. This is not for their health

You would not know this because you are not a pc gamer
You do not understand the hardware in your machines and the limitations of a device that has been drastically reduced in size.
Many laptop graphics chipsets are not supported or will not work at all.
However you will be the worse for not listening.
All i asked you to do was do download a program that is free install and run it and post a score. If you cant do that stick to consoles. If you are asking for help, would it not seem reasonable to put some effort in for the benefit of the helper.
i think you would be better of buying a magazine each month, reading, learning, making expensive mistakes like others before you.

hmmm an Interesting reply! Obviously you are the authority on everything IT! The fact that i am a Systems Administrator and have been for many many years might have something to do with me not asking you what hardware i need in a Laptop to play games on-line with. I know fully well what the requirements/spec of a machine should be for gaming and once i had established that i spent a considerable amount of money on the right Laptop for my requirements and surprise surprise i do read a great many magazines and reviews on all things IT its kinda my job as i have a huge budget to spend on Hardware and Software for my company. I didnt ask what hardware is required i asked for people to recommend good games that could be played on-line and I appreciate your concerns as to whether my Laptop could cope with the requirements needed but I had already said in previous replies to you that I knew my laptop could handle any game around at present, but that hasnt seemed to have dawned on you yet which is a pity. All I wanted as I have stated on numerous occasions now was some examples of good games possibly similar to Battlefield , its not rocket science is it? I think you need to read some up to date reviews on Laptops and maybe you will see that a great deal of them now have a lot more capabilities than they used to , shall i just say Alienware or perhaps you havent heard of them. I think we are done here now i have got better and more pressing things to deal with than your pettiness about a quite straight forward question.
Glad you doing well and enjoying your job.
Im sorry but you sounded a bit fresh to the scene in the post
if you were capable of answering the question why use Doom 3 as an example my god its three years old
why not say i have a sli setup or i am running a x1950xtx?
i have known of alienware for a longtime before they were bought by Dell. They can make some good machines for a premium. But you dont own one so i dont get to excited!
Why would you spend a considerable amount of money on a laptop for gaming?
Anything worth having would burn your lap due to heat.
so its not a laptop. its a desktop
battery would last 30 minutes so it needs to be plugged in.
not portable as such?
it still could not display native res with all the pretty stuff on, on any recent (not doom3) fps. so any yet to be released games no hope
If you have bought one of these then you are a bit silly sooper.
Well said death!! Sooper, you have wasted your money on a laptop. Im sorry. Guess all that vast knowledge in IT hasn't come in handy. Again, Im sorry.
Sooper !! Seems to me you entered into a debate in which you know nothing about. You have asked for help, which implies to me that you do not know the answer to your question. When the help was given you argued it. I agree with themac and death.
Yes death its a high price to pay for 17" gaming. Quite why you would want to escapes me also. Its not as if you would have these features built in for when your bored doing excel on the london victoria run for the practical reasons you mention.
Well anyway, if your still looking for an answer to your question sooper. Guild wars is a good place to start. unlike most online games it doesn't have a monthly fee. you pay the price of the game at the shop and thats it. Plus there is over a million members. the only disadvantage it has is that it's not as online as a lot of online games. You can if you choose go through the entire game without actually talking to or playing with anyone.

By the way. A desktop would be useful for this game because you can spend hours wasting your life playing online games (sigh)
if you liked dawn of ar i suggest company of heroes, its like dawn of war, but set in ww2 and more strategic a really good addictive game

Thanks Liam & Callum , finally some answers to my question! Sorry you had to wade through all of previous nonsense, it wasnt what i wanted or expected from people on Answerbank. Anyway i am liking the sound of Company of Heroes and may give that a go only, cheers guys.

Death- I didnt buy my laptop for gaming and i never said i did, i said i was thinking of trying it out for games as it had very good reviews and did extremely well in all related tests that it was put through and as such i wanted some suggestions for games. Thats it , i havent bought a bad machine or the wrong one and as you dont know what i will be primarily using it for you are not qualified to question or make your ill informed judgements are you.

Blade - I havent wasted any money on the wrong machine as i didnt buy it for gaming, that was just an added bonus of what the machine is capable of which was why i wanted some suggestions of games , a bit too much for you to grasp i think.

Guyrkp - I didnt ask for help with regards to what hardware and spec i needed to play games did i or perhaps you cant read either? I simply asked for some suggestions for game ideas that is it, i appreciate that the mack was concerned that i might buy a game that my machine could not run but i quite clearly replied that i knew my machine could handle any current game and for me that should have been enough and i was then hoping for some game examples, that was it. But what i thought was a failry simple question has turned into some huge debate about my machine and the fact that i have bought the wrong one etc when none of you even know what i have bought or the reasons i bought it or what i will be using it for, just a lot of incorrect assumptions and sweeping statements.

Good God, long answers. I know there are internet websites which give you free games (play online) but there are some great trials or things you can buy online...

Diner Dash 1/2/3, Virtual Villagers etc.
If you are interested in things like this go onto www.aol.com and go onto the games section. You can buy games (which i recommend. I have done so myself) on there or just try out a trial.

Sorry if this isn't the kind of answer your looking for
Also, try www.habbo.com / www.habbo.co.uk

Great online virtual game.
