Nescafe

14:39 Wed 26th May 2010 |

Nescafe is one of the best known brands of instant coffee in the world. While the Nescafe brand was created for soluble coffee, it has subsequently been used as an umbrella brand on a number of instant coffee products, including, in the UK, Gold Blend, Alta Rica and Blend 37 freeze-dried coffees.

Nescafe coffee was first produced in 1938 in Switzerland after seven years of development. It is the flagship powdered coffee product of Nestle and the name is a portmanteau of the words "Nestlé" and "café". During World War II it became the staple beverage of the US armed forces and, from then on, its popularity really took off.

As well as coffee Nestle is also famous for its range of breakfast cereals, confectionery, and ice cream amongst others. It is estimated that around 95% of households in the UK consume Nestlé products. Today Nescafe is the world’s favourite coffee; around 15,000 cups are drunk in the UK every minute despite the nation being traditionally a tea market.
