If you're in a rush, Greggs sell a lovely bread pudding slice -very spicy, very sticky and very yummy!
Tweenyb, I know the type you mean: you slice it like a loaf and put butter on it. Most bread puddings today require a spoon to eat it! My mother used to make the 'solid' ones many, many moons ago, and I remember her squeezing out the bread so maybe this receipe is what you're looking for.

half pint milk
2oz melted butter
3oz soft brown sugar
2 level teaspoons mixed spice
1 beaten egg
6oz mixed dried fruit
grated rind of half an orange
freshly grated nutmeg to sprinkle on top before baking

Gas mark 4 for 1-1quarter hours

let milk soak in bread for half hour
