My nomination for wine of the week is Makutu Bay Marlborough Sauvignon - currently down to £4.99 (rrp £9.99) in Sainsbury's.

I also thought the wine I tried in Café Rouge in Gun Wharf yesterday was worth a mention - Picpoul de Pinet. I've never tried it before and was delighted with it. It's dry, grassy and herbaceous, well rounded, with a lingering finish. I can highly recommend it. I will be looking out for more of this wine on my shopping expeditions.

If you have a nomination for wine of the week, please feel free to mention it. :-)

A chilled bottle of Carlsberg Export for me, I am not into wine :)
Ribena for me.

Can't be doin' with wine. Though I am good at whining.
Question Author
Best to stick to what you like, Mic.

Boo... Ribena is what I have first thing in the morning with my nurofen, after I've overdone the Sauv. lol
First Cape Limited Release Merlot - alcoholic content is a bit high for me (13.5%) - I prefer about 11.5 but it's so nice I'm prepared to make an exception. Find Aussie and SA wines usually quite high.
I am very much into Brown Brothers muscato rose.

You can buy this in Waitrose for about £5.99 a bottle.

It is a very light rose.
Rioja Campo Viejo Reserva 2006
oh yes and have been trying to track down a Cab Sav - Gallo family Sycamore Canyon 11.5% AC - can find lots of similar ones from Gallo but not this specific one - have tried googling, beating my wine merchant over the head and sulking but just can't track it down. I will not give up though!
Question Author
Oh yes, it's worth mentioning that the Makutu Bay Sauv is 13.5% - quite high for a white.

Funny, I'm not accustomed to Rosés, but on the rare occasions I have a Rosé wine or pink champers, I tend to favour those with very light/pale pink hues.

237... Campo Viejo are quite a large wine producer and one of the top sellers in Spain. I tried it once and it was okay.
carmalee - is the Gallo one exported? Maybe it`s just for the American market
excuse me NoM - 237SJ - don't think so cos I bought some last year from my local shop - he had it on a great offer - asked him to get me a case (okay several cases) and he really has tried but not come up with anything. Have also tried usual wine merchant and all they say is 'we just can't seem to find it' - maybe I'll contact Gallo direct!
Question Author
Carmalee - have you tried googling for stockists?

I know what it's like when you find a nice wine and then the high street supplier closes down and you can no longer find it. Grrr....
Nom this rose will be right up your street then!

It is so pale.
thanks NoM but yes, that what's so annoying - would happily buy a million cases but no-one will sell to me - maybe there was a promotion or something and the odd few stray cases escaped. Nice thread btw
Question Author
Thanks, Carmalee.

They're offering it here (if it's the right one) for £4.50 a bottle.

thank you NoM but that's not it - the important bit is Sycamore Valley (and the label shown on the link is completely different.) Seriously, think I'm going to contact them direct.
Question Author
Could it have been a limited release, Carmalee?

It was probably produced in the San Joaquín Valley, south of Sacramento, hence the "Valley" on the label.
Ahhh - then I think a begging note to the producers is in order - thanks a million for the interest - stay well C
Question Author
No worries, Carmalee. If I ever come across the wine, I'll give you a shout.

If you are a lover of Californian wines, Dancing Bull Zinfandel is one to beat !! I used to get it from Wine Rack or somewhere like that, and since they've closed down, I've been unable to find it anywhere. I daresay I'll encounter another supplier one of these days.
Whine of the week:
Asda have sold out of crumpets,
a woman after my own heart NoM!!- we'll talk again I'm sure
