specifically mixed spice and bouquet garni......their website was no help and the couple of UK based places that will ship product around the world wanted what i considered outraegeous amounts of money (over 15 quid for shipping) for a bottle of mixed spice and 2 boxes of bouquet garni....earlier this year someone sent me 4 packages of british wafer fans and that was around 8 pounds for shipping by air mail which i thought was very reasonable and they made here (to the states) all in one piece and they were delicious too...

btw. McCormick spices (here in the states) as i understand it is their parent company and emails to them went unanswered

any thoughts and/or suggestions on how i might get what i am looking for AND not feel like i am getting ripped for shipping......

thanks to all

is it because you're shipping foodstuff that it's expensive? are we allowed to send little bottles of spices/bouquet garni to the US? is posting to the US expensive from the UK?
apparently UK Royal Mail air-mail costs £2.94 for 200g to US - a small glass jar of Sainsbury's paprika weighs 158g so refill boxes should weigh less. So it shouldn't be a big deal to send it if sending food is allowed. I've bought supermarket bouquet garni and you get about 7 little bags in the jar - out of the jar they'd weigh nothing. Tell me what Schwartz spices you want - I'll price the refill boxes if available for you - glass jars are too heavy - and get back to you.

Is sending food allowed that's my only worry?
I avoid Schwartz products. Their quality seems no different from the same product offered by others which are available at sometimes less than half Schwartz's prices. I'm aware that Mixed Spice is generally unavailable in Canada and the US, (to the consternation of those living there who want to follow Delia Smith's recipes!). But you could always make up your own...

Similarly you could make up your own Bouquet Garni. Check out Google for ''bouquet garni recipe dried'' and for US online sources of ''bouquet garni bags''. (Remember, they can be re-used).

hey carrot...thank you for for the offer......what i am looking for is--(can you price these out first please) the 28g bottle of mixed spice; the 28g refill; 2 of the 5g packets of bouquet garni and if you wouldnt mind, the 15g bottle of szechuan peppercorns (a couple of weeks back gordon ramsay had a recipe for crispy squid that used that and 5 spice powder)....if it is at all possible, i would like to get the glass bottle (or plastic, whichever it is) to keep the stuff fresher longer....one of the bouquet garni i want to give to a chef that i work with, maybe as a christmas present (or an after christmas present so the boxes would add more overall weight but would be more practical)....let me know what you find out....i will stop at the post office my way to work monday and see what i can find out about the stuff coming into the states....thanks again!!!
I'm on the case!
Check this out...

My first thought when reading the question was that the company shipping would have to have some special license hence the higher price for shipping.
from my Sainsbury's supermarket online the prices I have so far are:

Schwartz bottle mixed spice 28g £1.40
plus for postage glass bottle weight c. 110g

Schwartz refill mixed spice 28g £1.23
cardboard box weight would only be a couple of grams

Haven't found a stockist for Szechaun peppercorns 15g but have seen them on Schwartz site so will look in store for them - price for black peppercorns 35g are bottle £1.25/refill £1.68 so Szechaun are probably similar price for half the volume!

Same with Schwartz bouquet garni - will look in store (for price comparison Sainsbury's charge 78p for 5g packet.)

Airmail from UK to US is £4.83 for up to 360g which should be enough.

I'll check other prices and get back to you tomorrow.
thanks Gilf I wouldn't have thought of customs! I shall pop into my post office to seek advice. It should be ok as it's non-commercial and just going to an individual, still I'll find out.

hey carrot...man oh man you are really on the case....thank you very much.....i stopped at the PO i go by everyday on my way to work and the postmaster went to the royal mail website....the info seemed a little vague...but from what she said, it would probably be best to send the stuff in its original packaging so as to avoid any confusion (even tho the cost for mailing it would be more)....i hope that helps a little bit...thanks again!!!
catch up with ya soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to heathfield--not so much delias website, tho there are some really good things there, i did a search thru mama.com and one of the links was at the co-op website for mini clemintine cheesecakes (which sounds really good0 and that is what helped to start all this hunting and searching.....

speaking of delia, i enjoyed her classic christmas tv special, but i was disappointed that there was no link or any recipe for the chocholate crumble which looked super delicious!!!!!!!

hey dave--thanks for the barts link....that might work too!!!

thanks to everyone...this is a great group!!!!!!!!!!!!
went into Sainsbury's after work they stock everything:

Schwartz bottle mixed spice 28g £1.40
Schwartz refill mixed spice 28g £1.23
Schwartz Szechuan peppercorns 15g £1.58
Schwartz 5g packet of bouquet garni 88p
(2 glass bottles weigh about 220g)

The woman in the Post Office said there's a custom's sticker to complete and stick on the package and according to Gilf's link there is an FDA number to obtain pre-posting so that the US can prepare for the arrival of a small pack of spices if necessary.

Let me know if you decide to give it a go.

oh yeah, would you please find a price for chinese 5 spice powder (doesnt have to be "name brand", store brand is ok too)

thanks again!!!!
Have you tried british stores in the us or canada? when my british friends moved to Carolina it was cheaper for me to order her baked beans etc from a store over there rather than send it from here.
for anyone who wants an update:

2 bottles of Schwartz spices and 3 Schwartz refill packets costing c. £6 and weighing 454 gms packed, went in the post to the US today with airmail postage of £6.03.

Apparently they should arrive in about a week.

There was a small customs sticker declaring the contents to go on the parcel but there was no need for a prior notification form to be completed because it was just commercially prepared food sent between individuals. Easy peasy if the parcel arrives safely!!
