Trouble opening tinned food

Has anyone else experienced trouble opening tinned food with a can opener over the last year or so? I have tried a number of different tin openers and none seem to work too well (including one that previously did). The tin openers don't seem to grip the rim of the can and allow a continuous opening motion. I assumed initially it was the tin openers but I now think that the cans are being made thinner to save money resulting in making them hard to open.

i have an electric one which i've had for years - about 20 years i think - and it's great, never have any problems. well worth 12.99 which is what the model i have costs these days.
Agree. Electric ones are the best for those awkward cans. If you keep them clean around the cutting bit, they last for years.
yes agreed, but i just put it down to the cheap can openers ive been using which constantly break,im going through an opener a month, maybe its about time i splurged on a decent one lol!
had trouble for last 6 months or so, so bought a one touch electric one they r absolutely brill.
I always thought the electric ones were rubbish ! so you all recommend electric ?
We've had about 4 tin openers in the last year!! Thought it was just us!
I have also had the same trouble and was thinking it was the opener, but your suggestion of the thinner cans may be true, of course the manufacturers would not let on if they were trying to save money that way.
I'm left handed and find manual openers a nightmare as they are designed for rightys (as are a heck of a lot of other kitchen stuff, us leftys have a hard time) I use an electric opener - as littlegriff said - they're brill.
