I normally buy a Bootiful turkey from Bernard Mathews and never had a fresh one.

As christmas approaches I have been contemplating a fresh turkey and they seem expensive.

Is it worth paying the extra??

i would say so,because frozen turkey is pumped up with water, and the taste is so much better!!!
sorry meant the fresh turkey tastes better!!
I used to get frozen, but for the last 6 years I've had a fresh turkey from my local butchers. I think on average I've paid 4-5 per lb-though the price may have gone up alot this year who knows? I collect it the day before xmas eve, it comes with the giblets and the turkey is always delicious. Can't beat it.
A fresh turkey definitely produces better results. The texture of the white meat seems to be degraded if the bird is frozen.

Chris

PS: Being on my own these days, I don't actually buy either. I'm just recalling the turkeys that other people used to serve me on Christmas Day. (I usually buy cooked, sliced turkey breast and just heat it in the oven. Last year I bought one of those ready-stuffed frozen turkey joints but, on Christmas Day, I couldn't be bothered to cook it. So it was Findus lasagne for Christmas lunch in my house! Bah, humbug! Scrooge rules, OK?!)
I buy a capon,which a big chicken!!

That's given me a good idea Puddicat!

A capon! I might just try that.
Why not get a turkey, crown (either fresh or fozen) then you don't have to bother with all the left over bones etc
I get the crown, don't like those great big legs, no-one ever eats the damn things.

Hi Horselady (interesting name)

I agree crowns are better, as everyone wants the breast meat.

I dont have alot of money but i never skimp when it comes to meat - I think free range fresh has to be done!
I buy a turkey crown as well as a gammon joint witch i boil an use the liquids as a soup base. Makes it tasty. Marks& spencers crowns arent to pricey.
I buy a fresh free range turkey from my butcher and get him to crown it and give me the legs and wings as well. You have to pay for the whole thing so you might as well have it. The legs get frozen for roasts later in the year.

Much nicer than Bernard Matthews crap - did you not see the news stories about his turkeys??

I did Doglady (another interesting name), I did!!

That's what putting me off too, that turkey scare!
errrr... I prefer the leg meat.. the breast meat is so dry!
Chris, I'm on my own too and last Christmas day I had mince and mash! this year it will probably be really expensive bangers and mash, would you care to join me? I've got a couple of nice bottles of wine as well. Doglady, I agree with you about Bernard Mathews cr@p I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole mostly because of the cruelty inflicted on these creatures.
A capon- There has not been such a thing for 20 years, They are illegal . Somebody is stringing you along
