i like mixing soy beans. kidney and haricot, butter beans are nice as well
i reckon kidney beans or maybe haricot beans!

Haricot are baked beans aren't they??

Can I use them and omit the tom puree, or am I now being lazy?
if your trying to avoid a messy table and messy guests, under no circumstances should you use mexican jumping beans!
I would use a mix of say, butter beans, cannelli beans and either red kidney beans or gungo beans.

and dont forget to hand out the gasmasks because
''BEANS''
''MEANS''
''FARTS!''
How about tins of mixed beans, most supermarkets do them. Tesco (the b*****ds) do one called Taco Mixed beans (in a spicy tomato sauce with red peppers), it contains kidney, pinto, haricot, cannellini and black eyed beans.
i'd put a tin of chickpeas in too, i really like the texture of them and quite often substitute them for beans.
Abdul - aduki beans are little red legumes and very tasty too ! If you google them you will find that they are really healthy and nutritious... just remember to soak them overnight, then boil in clean water for about an hour (I just use my pressure cooker for less than 10 minutes on the pre-soaked beans). I've not seen them sold already cooked in cans (anyway, much cheaper to buy the dried versions).

Most people who rarely eat beans and other pulses suffer from *wind* but this doesn't affect those who have lots of fibre etc in their diet (like veggies etc - ie. me !)

Regarding your recipe - I think 3 cans of (cooked ?) beans way OTT to feed 4 people... I would use one can (rinsed) of say chickpeas, red kidney beans or borlotti beans (or even a bean salad mix), along with a whole raft of other veg - whatever looks tasty and fresh in the shop ! Fry up your onions, leeks, garlic, celery, peppers, mushrooms etc, add the tomatoes, water, salt, pepper, spices & herbs and allow it all to talk to itself for at least half an hour before adding the rinsed beans and heating through.

Big hint to getting a decent taste on a bean/veggie stew - add either a can of chick pea dahl or some split red lentils - these are brill at adding a whole load of protein, taste and body to a veggie stew. You can cook the lentils separately and add them to the stew later if you like, just make sure they are slightly *mushy* and add some salt too.
Jamie Oliver reckons that Cannellini are the king of beans!
Broad-beans/black beans etc. If raw they need to soak overnight to soften before cooking.

Beans, being bland, need spicing up to taste. n.b. too many cause wind and r duretic. Give u propulsion ;-))

ALL BEWARE Abdul's eating beans.....dont walk behind him!
