The piglet is due to be weaned shortly so does anyone have any recipies for baby food for her in the future? As she is my first child (and possibly last) I havent got a clue.

Also I was going to start her on baby rice or Farleys rusks but when and how often? she will be 15 weeks on saturday and her night time feed does not seem to be satisfying her as she is still waking up between 3-5 am even though she takes 6oz of 'greedy' baby food before bed.

I know they say babies should not be weaned before 17 weeks but I just want to have all the info I can before I start.

many thanks

hi warpig, both of mine started on solids at 3/4 months as they were both hungry, my midwife said it was fine, i started by just giving them an evening meal so that they were more satisfied during the night. we dodnt use rice at all, mine had the same food we had, even at 4 months they ate the same sunday lunch as we did, they had mash with veg, and we just blended it all up. we dont use any salt in our food anyone but if you do just make a seperate portion. my kids loved mince meat, they ate cottage pie, mash and beans.
you cangive her anything you have that can be blended to a puree just leave out the salt.

mine had one meal a day for the first week or so and then we gave them breakfast too, after a month they were on 3 meals a day. mine had a rusk mashed up with there milk for breakfast, you can always add, jam or something too it for a better flavour
Sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and brocolli all blended together and put into ice cube trays are healthy and convenient. You can pop them out the tray, defrost and heat up as and when you need them.
hi warpig,

Little CRX started on carbohydrates at 16 weeks on advice of HV as he was on 8oz bottles and starting to wake at night again.

I skipped the baby rice and used the baby porridges. I would make an 8oz bottle and then use 3ozs to make his porrige. Id give him 2ozs of remander of milk and then feed him the porrige, then give him the last 3ozs of milk.

I would do this in morn and at tea time (last bottle before bedtime one).

A few weeks later i started giving him veggies (boiled, mashed and frozen into small pots to make it easier)
You are supposed to introduce foods one at a time to ensure that the baby is not allergic but if you are mixing foods then dont mix too many.

By 6/7 months he was eaten a lot of what we ate but in a mashed form. Dont leave it too late to introduce some lumps (about 7/8 months)

I started with soft lumps, like mashed fruits and also bought a tiny shaped pasta for making cheesy pasta and spag bol etc.

Thank you all, this gonna be fun! Food everywhere except in her mouth, cant wait, better have the camera ready.
good tip to help distract her as youre feeding is to give her her own spoon to hold.

good luck
I started mine on baby rice at tea time at 15+2 weeks.

I just use one little spoon of rice and 2-3 dessert spoons of her milk. She has her normal 5oz feed, then I warm up 3oz. I use what I need for the rice and offer her the rest after shes eaten the rice. She then has another bottle before bedtime.

I told the HV today and expected a lecture but she was ok with it. She recommended keeping her on the one meal a day a little longer just maybe increasing the amount as she has no problem eating it all. I think Im going to wait until shes about 6 months before introducing our home cooked meals but will start her with some fresh pureed fruit a little sooner. I say that now of course, but no doubt will change my mind lol

If you feel she is ready and showing signs of needing that something else, then do it when you think the times right. Just wait til she sneezes with a mouthful of food! lol
I told you I wouldnt stick to my plan lol

Last night I gave her double the amount of bay rice and she still ate the lot no problems so today she had lunch for the first time. I gave her 1/4 of a rusk mixed with her milk. Not only did she do well with it, she also tried eating her bib with the rusk in her mouth! Made a nice little mess lol I will still give the baby rice at tea time which I have increased to 2 little spoons of rice, mixed with 4-5 dessert spoons of her milk.

psychick, I made up some baby rice last night, one part rice to 10 parts milk (as instructed on the box) but it was just milk really. do you give it to Holly in a bottle or by a spoon (also the picture on the box showed it as more 'solid')? If by a bottle, do you use a special teat? I did try to give her a little bit by spoon but really I just smeared it all over her face and bib (with a little help from her). Giving her a spoon to hold herself did work though, had to prize it out of her hand long after the face painting was over!
I use a baby spoon designed as a first spoon in that its little and shallow. Nice and runny is good because its more what they are used to. You can make it thicker after she is used to it. Its recommended you never put food such as rice or rusk in their bottles as it poses a choking hazard. Something else done differently to in the past lol

Baby crying, I will finish off later lol
Nice, she decided to wet whilst her nappy was off! Luckily I managed to mop most of it up as she went along lol

Anyway, at the moment Im not giving her anything to distract her as I find this just encourages her to put her hands to her mouth, like she did with her bib today lol Try pushing the spoon in and sort of tipping the food into her mouth. Not too far back though in case she chokes. Be ready with the empty spoon to catch what she pushes out though lol

Its only going to get messier! Hehe!
As a start I would agree that baby rice or porridge are the best as you can add any other flavours to them - Pureed apple or pear or carrot are good ones to start with, if you are really lazy, get tins of fruit in fruit juice - remove most of the juice and puree, freeze in ice cube trays and add a cube to the meal- it cools it down at the same time - two jobs in one!

thanks Annie and Psychick, this is not easy at all, so all help and advice is greatfully received. Am gonna leave it for a couple more weeks (maybe) as not sure the piglet is ready, think perhaps it is more for me than her!!! Just wishing for a full nights sleep.
