What is the name of an aromatic dried flower bud used worldwide as a culinary spice?

I keep thinking saffron - but that is not made from the bud is it?

Saffron comes from the stamens of crocus very expensive in England and clove looks like a nut shape which you grate
a Clove is a dried bud
