I've got an old recipe for beef tea. Would that be similar?

Turn this into a Welsh Broth by using lamb in place of the beef.

Or a proper Brown Windsor: http://www.thefoody.com/soups/windsorsoup.html

The most basic beef broth to make is simply gently boiling beef and rice in water, seasoning and straining the broth to serve. Adjust the amounts of beef and rice to suit, but to 1 lb of minced or shredded beef add about 2 tbspn rice. Cook in 4 pints water. Shin of beef is probably a good cut for this.

Hope this helps...
