diabetic food for children

I have a 9 year old son who has just been diagnosed type 1 diabeties. please can anyone let me know of any nice recipes for children with this condition.

hello jojo. it's a devastating diagnosis isn't it? my son (now 26) was diagnosed at 10 years old. i can't give you any recipes as i didn't do it that way, just fed him a good, healthy diet. the main thing we did was cut out sugary drinks, puddings, and sweets. he ate a lot of yoghurt for dessert, lots of potatoes (chips, mash, roast) for the carbs. and he loved meat too. so i found roast dinners were a great meal for him, along with burger and chips, cottage pie. he was allowed a small amount of chocolate after his meal to satisfy his sweet tooth.
he's a big, strapping 6ft 5ins young man now, went off to university for 4 years and now lives and works 300 miles away.
i found it took me about 2 years to come to terms with it, and stop grieving. there's so much to take in isn't there? you'll get there in the end. ask to be put in touch with other mum's in the same situation, it really is a great help.

just another thought jojo. we have a life-time subscription to diabetes uk for our son which means we get their magazine each month, which we then post on to him. it contains a whole section of recipes, along with all sorts of interesting articles and letters. if you're in the uk this might be worth thinking about. i think it costs about �40 for the lifetime subscription.
There is no reason why a diabetic person should not eat the same sensible diet as anyone else.Just use common sense with the amount of sugary foods.
I would have thought that you would have had access to a dietician through your doctor's surgery or hospital specialist, whoever treat him
For goodness sake don't buy 'diabetic' foods such as jam or chocolate from shops, as the sweeteners they use tend to cause diarrhoea.

ask your doctor about the dafne course it works out the exact amount of insulin for the amount of food he is eating very new but best possible way to get the right balance. before that i would reccommend the GI diet it releases energy really slowly so stops the peaks and trofts so my dietician ( im type one to got it when i was 21 now 26) recommends to stay away from really processed food i.e food that doesnt need breaking down i.e mash, jacket spuds, i crave the sweetness so she suggested jelly with fruit in as majority water an low calories have as much as i want.

I would like to thank everyone for their replys to my question about diabeties its all been a great help for me.

I would like to also ask if anyone knows anything about anaphylaxis also as my daughter is 19 years old and has had six attacks in the last 14 months.
She has seen an allergy specialist at the hospital and he has told my daughter not to have any food containing red/yellow colourings, no aspirin, also no non steroid medication.
Although she has been very careful to avoid all these things she has still suffered another attack which follows with a condition named urticaria.
I will say that every time she has had an attack she has been sitting outdoors when it has been warm, although not directly in the sun but shaded under garden parasol.
does anyone have any ideas that would help me find the cause of these attacks, the specialist told us we may never find the cause of them but it is very worrying.
