I am off to the zoo for the day on Thursday and its been left to me to sort out eating arrangements. Money is quite tight but we can stretch to grabbing a sandwich there at lunchtime, but was thinking about taking some sort of picnic for on the way home. Bearing in mind the car is going left all day and we are not travelling home till bout 6 o clock what kind of things would anyone suggest that we could take with us that will keep all day in the car. I have a cool box with plenty of ice packs. Was thinking of things like crackers, cheese etc but need some more inspiration! Thanks.

how about sausage rolls, mini sausages, scotch eggs that sort of thing also breadsticks and crisps
pitta bread stuffed with any kind of filling you like (ham, salad, egg, pate, etc.) they travel well and are easy to eat. we always used to take a flask with cooked sausages in it, and some rolls. really tasty and the sausages stay warm, but don't forget the ketchup!
Fill some baguettes or pitta breads in the morning, we also take a tube of Pringles, bananas, grapes, strawberries, yoghurts, bottled water, flask of hot water (to make hot chocolate which we also take!) and flask of coffee and biscuits.
Copper Pennies
Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

1 cup sugar
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
1 (10 3/4-ounce) can tomato soup
2 pounds carrots, peeled, cooked, and sliced
1 medium onion, sliced into rings
1 green bell pepper, coarsely chopped

Combine the sugar, vinegar, oil, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and add the soup. Mix the carrots, onion, and bell pepper together in a large glass dish; pour the sauce over the vegetables, stir gently to combine, and refrigerate overnight. This salad will keep for up to 6 weeks in the refrigerator.
