I love the taste of abalone. Sometimes I cook it with oyster sauce and at other times I cook it with pork and chicken.
It is quite expensive. I usually pay about 25 for a tin of about 500gm (I haven't got any at the moment so can't check). I get it from a Chinese supermarket in Manchester, usually as a special treat for dinner parties.
My daughter had it at an Asian wedding - "a bit ordinary" she said. I was once going to order it, but had just bought her a saxophone :(. Never thought of tinned abalone - I think I'll try that :).
I live in Jersey and they have something very similar to an Abalone callerd an Ormer. Its only found in the Channel Islands I undertand and is considered a delicace. I dont eat shellfish myself so have never tried it, but I know people who have and they rave about them. They are fairly expensive, a pound or two each, but you could always try one of them as an alternative. I'm assuming that they ship them to the UK, although as I say they are fairly rare and are not commercially fished but gathered by enthusiats after a high tide looking in the rocks and sometimes even by sailing out to the small group of islands called the Minquiers which are almost uninhabited. Well, i'm waffling now, so I'll leave it at that.
Fresh Red California Abalone. An extravagant opening course. The abalone was served warmed in beurre blanc with Ossetra Caviar . Barley cooked. Very tender! $25 US Never had tinned.
