What is done to beef to make it into corned beef?

Corning is the process of preserving meat using salt or brine. So if beef has been corned it becomes 'Corned Beef'.
...much of it done (historically, at least) in the Uruguayan town of... Fray Bentos!
Is it just me that thought corned beef came from cows that only ate corn :o)

I was wondering how they got the corn in and why I couldn't taste it!
the unrefined salt used to preserve the beef was in lumps (like dishwasher salt) which were called 'corns'
