This has been a difficult year for growing tomatoes, especially if grown outdoors with an irregular water supply because of the heatwave. This seems to be making both the skins tougher and the cores bigger, with less overall flesh. Supermarket tomatoes grown in poly tunnels may have had more regular watering and be less prone to this but will still have suffered from excess heat which has probably impeded the development of the flesh.
