We have three branches of L*dl in South Pembrokeshire, and they all have banana shallots on sale most of the time. Pretty cheap, too.
Look for 'echalion' as another name for them. They are larger than normal shallots - result of a cross of onion/shallots, so flavour is fairly mild. Season in UK is until March, so last of the fresh ones now around - others on sale later will be imported and not as good as the fresh seasonal ones.

Should add - to buy, try local box schemes to buy them, such as: http://www.rowswellsfarm.com/?pg=pg3 or http://www.rodandbens.com/index.html depending where you live.

Just put box scheme in as a serch and have a look at who is close to you and you'll find them cheaper than imported s/market stuff - fresh as well as being local so no 'old' stock sent to you.

If you have a local Booths supermarket, they always have them stocked.
Waitrose are selling English Echalions in all branches. The season will end towards the end of March so hurry, although there will possibly be some imported new season Echalions available after that which will be every bit as fresh.
