Difficult one to answer, we've tried lots of different ones, some are nice some not. Some seem to have more crust than insides.

Jason's £2 loaf has been getting rave reviews

Jason's sourdough the great white from Sainsbury's is my fav

Or make your own.

Surely you don't have to change over to it, you simply buy a loaf and see what you think. It's not like converting to catholicism or becoming a nun. I like some sourdough but not all.

What are the advantages of sourdough bread over normal bread?

It's easier to digest for some people because  the long fermentation breaks down gluten.

It's got a lower glucose index so is better for some diabetics.

Proper sourdough bread has only three ingredients plus the starter so has less additives than some shop bought bread.

I sometimes buy a sourdough from Lidl. Nothing really to compare it with. Bit difficult to cut through the hard crust when fresh but it softens up after a day. Not had any significant "holes" in them.

Asda do some variations but not always available.

You do have to be careful when choosing sourdough bread, some loaves are not proper sourdough but are loaves with sourdough.

A sourdour loaf should only have the starter (fermented yeast), flour, salt and water.  Nothing else.

This Asda 'exceptional' sourdough loaf has 'Fortified Wheat Flour [Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin (B3), Thiamin (B1)], Water, Rice Flour, Salt, Wholemeal Wheat Flour, Wheat Meal Flour, Rapeseed Oil'

They're not the only ones, all supermarkets and many other outlets do the same sort of thing.

If I'm not mistaken, all UK breadflour is fortified.

The lidl, and also aldi sourdoughs are not real sourdough as they list yeast as an added ingredient. A fermented starter produces what is known as 'wild yeast'. It's part of the process, not an addition.

For real sourdough look for Jason's as mentioned, also Bertinet...sold at Waitrose and Ocado. Supermarkets that do their own include Sainsbury's, Tesco, and M and S. They will mention a starter in either the description or the ingredients. Read the labels.

21.16 i wish I'd seen this thread when I was in Uk recently, I just ate Warburtons brown bread.

I'll know next time I'm over. ; )

Yeah, we've had Jason's from time to time.

"... can anyone recommend a nice sourdough bread,"

The words "nice" and "sourdough" cannot be used in the same sentence when describing a single variety of bread.  😀
