I can't be doing with sandwich makers so please don't suggest I buy one. I love a cheese toastie that has lots and lots of cheese but sometimes it has not melted enough.

Could this be solved by a quick blast in the microwave and if so, before or after putting in the frying pan?

While you are frying it do it on a low heat with the pan lid on.

you can buy reusable toasting bags

Since when did you use a frying pan for toasting? Grill the toast, sprinkle liberally with cheese and blast in the micro. Don't forget the Lea&Perrins.
Oh Yes, gotta have the Lea & Perrins:-)

I can't be doing with faffy gadgets and my toaster's slots are wide enough for a sandwich.

Thanks, APG, I'll try it with the lid on.

Jackdaw, using a frying pan is the proper and original way to make a toasted sandwich.
My old Nana always made them in the frying pan, she had neither a microwave or a toastie.
I’m pretty sure a lower heat, for longer, would be the answer, and squash it down with a spatula.
And now I want one..
If you put it in a frying pan, are you not frying the bread rather than toasting it?
Since he’s been at uni, me and boy #1 have been trying to perfect the grilled cheese sandwich. He favours three different cheeses and a long, low fry but if I do it I chuck it I’m the oven to ensure melted perfection.

Good idea to pop it in a hot oven, Sherra. If the lid doesn't do the trick I'll try that.

Barsel TOAST VERB

Do you use any fat when doing it in a frying pan?

Jackdaw, I liberally spread both outsides of the sandwich with best butter and put a good dollop in the pan.
Use butter an olive oil for a even yummier sarnie
When I toast bread, I put it in the toaster or under the grill. If I fry bread, I put it in a frying pan with oil. There is a difference between fried bread and toast.
Barry ^^^^ thats food porn! :-)

Barsel, if you use a grill isn't it grilled bread? What do you call it when you cook over an open coal fire?

If you make the sandwich the way you described it isn't a toasted sandwich, it is filled toast.
I used to dip my buttered cheese sarnie in egg...then fry. It was yummy.
Barsel, you can toast bread in a frying pan.
