When did the uncivilised habit of drinking beer out of bottles catch on?

Back in the 60s or 70s, if a barman had given you a bottle and no glass, you would have complained. Now it seems to be the norm.

So what happened?

//People drink from water bottles & soft drinks bottles all the time - is that uncivilised?// Yes. Eating and drinking in the street at all is uncivilised and if you’re indoors you can use a respectable receptacle. //Were you to take a bottle of lager from the fridge and pour it into a glass, you would immediately raise the temperature of the lager. which would...

Spiked drinks maybe?
don't know but just yesterday four ladies sat outside the pub and drank from their bottles, no asking for a glass, nor were they young.
i like my drink in a proper glass
they were drinking that corona beer with lime stuck in the top>.
Young people tend to stand as well and normally have their thumb over the top of the bottle, there's morons out there that think spiriting someone's drink is funny
having had my drink spiked several times by adults, one by the publican, i can testify to the results.
these were ladies in their 40's 50's bobbi
I think American TV is to blame where ales are drunk straight from the bottle.
could be Danny..

Why don’t we do away with cutlery, too? And crockery?

Good enough at the zoo.
that would be daft, though some people prefer their food out of a box, i.e McDonalds, and no cutlery to be seen
Not funny that Emmie x
it wasn't, the first time was on holiday in Spain, last day of hols and the new batch of tourists had arrived from UK, i was sitting on beach, and someone kept on topping up my orange juice, i didn't know that they were putting in large vodkas. I went into alcoholic meltdown,
the reps got me on the plane somehow. I was sick at London Heathrow, and then all the way home.
If you don't like it then don't do it but let others have their choices. In the summer as well as drink spiking....and I think it took off with the advent of massive tablet recreational drug use and the ensuing people who thought it was a good idea to spike people's drinks,....its easier to keep flies and wasps out of the drink.
So stupid and irresponsible Emmie
i was supposed to go back to work, but ended up being off with alcohol poisoning..

Don’t be cross, woofgang.

The main beneficiaries of this infantile regression are surely publicans, who spend less on glasses, glass collecting and cleaning.

Teach people to SAVOUR what they eat and drink. Difficult out of a cardboard box, a plastic cup, or a bottle.
Its you who are criticising other people's choices.
totally agree. Our local is giving food in cardboard boxes, with plastic cutlery, which i won't use, their kitchens are presumably in some form of lockdown, as only the minimal food is being offered,
A pub where I worked in the late 90's wouldn't let you drink from bottles because A: If they was any trouble a bottle could be used as a weapon & B: It was said by the Brewery you could catch legionnaires disease from them ?
Surely a glass is a worse weapon than a bottle!
