I find that most places offer many meals that are too expensive for the cost of the food . A restuarant near me charges a meal with chicken breast for £13.95 yet a can buy 3 whole chickens for £10.00

This is a no-contest situation: if you don't want to do any cooking, then eat out, and pay someone else to do it for you.
What about the the fact that you're paying the wages of the restaurant staff?
The actual cost of the food is minimal. You are paying for the cost of electricity to cook the item, the cooks wages, having it served by a waitress, and all other costs associated with the restaurant.
On the other hand you could go to a fast food outlet and get fried chicken, fries and a drink for £6......
Restaurants are usually businesses that want to run to make a profit for the owner. The cost of the food is only one of the many costs incurred by such a business. It is naive to think that a restaurateur would sell meals for cost. When eating out, the price you pay not only reflects the cost of the food, but a proportion of the costs incurred by the business plus a profit margin for the owner. To an extent, you also pay for the ambience of the place and the pleasure of eating there (not that it's always present).
3 chickens for £ 10.00?

I bet they taste lovely...
You are paying for the whole experience of - hopefully! - a nice evening out. Warmth good service ambience and food you might not cook at home.
Tilly lol! that's the first thing that crossed my mind too....I bet the poor things had a horrible life.
We had a lunch at a local pub today. 2 Brie and bacon paninis, 2 huge jacket filled jacket spuds,2 fish and chips all served with side salad and a round of drinks for £9 a head. Friendly staff nice surroundings. I call that value for money
Wow, what car do you drive MargoTester ... a DeLorean?
Never, ever eat chicken! It's very bad for you! As is fresh fish. And curries. The three most common causes of stomach trouble in this country. You'll be SOREEEEE!
You can buy three chickens for £10 but you don’t have to pay someone to cook them, you don’t have to pay someone to serve them, you don’t have to pay for someone to wash the dishes, you don’t have to pay someone to clean the tables and floors and you don’t have to pay business rates, VAT, etc. I hope you get my drift.

What total rubbish. May be just don't know how to cook these things properly.
I cook. I eat out. I know when I am getting value for my money or I don't go back. A meal with a chicken breast? What would that be then. Chicken and chips in a basket or a well presented free range, reliably sourced and happy to die for you, lovingly prepared piece of chicken with a marvellous sauce and accompaniments at a pleasant establishment? Bargain if so.

Most of the people who replied completely ignored the question "Do we get value for money"
What this has got to do with cleaning tables ,staff wages, electricity,
Naomi 24 read the question again and give a sensible answer
I believe that the majority of the times I have eaten out, be it in cafes or restaurants, chippies or pizza joints I have had value for money.
Looking at the replies most people think that they are getting value for money........except the op. Please keep away from anywhere that I may dine out. The last thing I need is someone looking for a complaint sitting close by when I am trying to relax and have a pleasant time.
Do any of you know the G.P.(gross profit) that a restaurant needs to be attaining if it is to be a successful business?
I read the question and I gave a sensible answer. You want someone to do it all for you, you have to pay for it because they have to pay for it.
Someone is making a profit so of course you're paying a premium, but there are some decent offers out there if not too fussy.
Of course they’re making a profit. They run businesses for a living. It’s how they earn their wages.
